Brussels

August 17th, 2009

semi-overcast 21 °C

There is a famous statue in Brussels called the Manneken Pis. It is of a young boy peeing into a fountain. It is a major tourist attraction. It also seems to be a model for the way of life here in Brussels, as people freely pee in the streets. You would be hard pressed to find a street in this city that doesnt smell like pee. There are outdoor urinals set up in strange places, but worst of all, right beside a church. Gross. I myself saw a man pee on the side of a tree, next to a church, beside people sitting on a bench and facing the street. Really gross. If I had known Brussels was a public washroom, I probably wouldnt not have come.

Brussels is nice for the most part, but it seems a little rough around the edges. The buildings arent maintained as well, there is more litter, and for the first time I fear my things may be stolen. Hopefully tomorrow will change my mind, but for now Im sticking with my first impression and being extra careful with my belongings.
